Best eSIM / SIM options for travellers

Dialog vs Mobitel, airport SIMs vs pre-installed eSIMs, coverage in the hill country, and a practical buy-before-you-fly vs buy-on-landing decision tree.

Local data in Sri Lanka is inexpensive and good enough for maps, WhatsApp, PickMe/Uber-style rides, and hotel bookings. The two networks travellers should care about are Dialog Axiata and SLT-Mobitel. Dialog is usually the safer default for hill country (Ella, Nuwara Eliya, Haputale) and safari approaches; Mobitel is a close second in cities and along many coasts. Hutch is a thinner budget option. Airtel’s consumer brand in Sri Lanka is now under Dialog’s umbrella — do not plan around a separate Airtel island network.

Decision tree: Trip under ~10–14 days with moderate data → buy an international travel eSIM (Airalo, Holafly, Nomad, Saily and similar) before you fly, preferably one that roams on Dialog. Install on hotel/airport Wi-Fi before departure so you are online the moment you land. Trip 2+ weeks or heavy uploads → buy a Dialog or Mobitel tourist physical SIM at Bandaranaike (CMB) arrivals; packs are often around a few US dollars’ equivalent for tens of GB plus local minutes (prices move — read the counter board). Passport registration is required for local SIMs.

Airport walkthrough

After landing, look for Dialog and Mobitel tourist counters in the arrivals hall (before or near the exit flow — follow signage). Queue with passport unlocked phone, choose a tourist pack, and keep the SIM tray tool handy. Queues can stretch after long-haul banks of flights; if you hate waiting, pre-install an eSIM and walk straight to your transfer. Some travellers ask their driver to stop at a town Dialog shop instead — faster than a jammed terminal counter.

Coverage reality: Expect strong signal in Colombo, Galle, and most resort towns. Expect dropouts inside Wilpattu, deep jungle edges, some ridge trails, and remote estate roads. Download offline Google/Maps.me areas for safari and Pekoe Trail days. Hotel Wi-Fi varies; treat mobile data as your reliability layer for coordinating hosts and drivers.

Setup tips: Enable data roaming only on the travel eSIM line; keep your home SIM for SMS/2FA if needed. Top up Dialog/Mobitel at grocery shops, official apps, or dealer kiosks. If voice calls matter, confirm whether your eSIM is data-only (many are) and keep WhatsApp Calling as backup.
