First-Timer's Guide to Sri Lanka's Train Journeys
How to book Kandy–Ella and other scenic services on the official seat reservation site, which class to choose, and how to combine trains with a driver for luggage.

The highland railway — especially Kandy (or Peradeniya) through to Ella and Badulla — is one of Asia’s great budget scenic rides: tea terraces, mist, and Nine Arch Bridge near Demodara. Other useful reserved corridors include Colombo–Kandy, Colombo–Galle/Matara (coast), and long-haul services to Jaffna or Batticaloa. Treat the train as a highlight segment, not your only logistics layer.
Booking walkthrough
Create an account on the official Sri Lanka Railways seat reservation portal (seatreservation.railway.gov.lk). Search origin/destination and date, then pick class. Priority order for the highland day train: Observation saloon (panoramic) → Air-conditioned / 1st reserved → 2nd reserved → 3rd unreserved (turn up and board). Pay by Visa/Mastercard, save the e-ticket/QR, and present it when conductors check. Reservations can generally be made until close to departure, but popular observation seats sell out weeks ahead in peak season.
If the official site times out with international cards, reputable aggregators that write into the same railway inventory (for a small fee) are a practical backup — still prefer the official portal when it works. Unreserved 2nd/3rd class tickets are also sold at station counters the same day; arrive early and expect crowds on weekends.
Onboard tips: Sit on the right side Kandy→Ella for classic valley views (left Ella→Kandy) — local advice varies by consist, so ask staff. Keep bags in sight; use a cable lock. Buy water/snacks before boarding. Trains can run late — do not schedule a same-evening domestic flight too tightly after Ella.
Hybrid logistics
Ride the scenic segment with day packs only; have a driver move big luggage by road and meet you at Ella or Nanu Oya. That combo is how most comfortable travellers do the highlands. We can arrange the car leg around your ticketed train.
