What to pack for Sri Lanka
One bag for hot coasts, cool tea country, temple dress codes, monsoon squalls, and safari dust — with a plug-type cheat sheet.
Think three climates in one suitcase: humid coasts (Colombo, Galle, east beaches), cooler evenings in Nuwara Eliya/Ella, and dusty Cultural Triangle / safari days. Pack breathable shirts and trousers/skirts, one light fleece or long-sleeve for highlands, and a compact rain shell for Yala-monsoon afternoons or hill mist.
Walkthrough by trip type: Beach-first (Dec–Mar south or May–Sep east) — swimwear for the hotel, cover-up for town, one nicer outfit for dinners. Highlands & Pekoe — trail shoes, rain shell, warm layer even in “summer.” Safari — muted colours, long sleeves against sun and dust, binoculars if you own them. Cultural Triangle — temple-ready layers every day you visit ruins.
Temple kit
Shoulders and knees covered at Buddhist and Hindu sites. A thin scarf or sarong weighs nothing and solves dress-code surprises (many major sites also lend sarongs for a small fee). Slip-on shoes help with repeated shoe removal. Socks are useful on hot stone courtyards. Do not pack clothing printed with Buddha images.
Footwear & day kit
Broken-in walking shoes for Pidurangala, Pekoe segments, and fortress walls; sandals for beach towns; optional water shoes for rocky coves. Daypack, refillable bottle, reef-safe sunscreen, DEET or picaridin repellent, personal meds (include oral rehydration), hand sanitiser, tissues, and a small dry bag for boat days.
Power & gadgets
Sri Lanka uses plug types D, M, and G (often mixed in older hotels). Bring a universal adapter and a power bank for long train or safari days. Offline maps and downloaded train tickets save you when signal drops. A headlamp helps early Pidurangala starts and power cuts.
Leave space
Tea, spices, cinnamon, and handmade crafts are the usual souvenirs. Skip bulky formalwear unless you have a wedding or press event. Laundry is cheap in guesthouses — pack for 5–7 days and wash mid-trip rather than overstuffing. Check airline liquid rules if you plan to fly home with coconut oil or Ayurvedic products.
